Are you wondering how to find out more about 4-H? Are you curious about what you can do in 4-H?As a youth? As an adult volunteer? If you are in kindergarten through the 12th grade you can join 4-H. In addition, we are always looking for adult volunteers to work with the great variety of programs in Mason County.

The 4-H Youth Development program provides hands-on learning opportunities for youth, K-12. The program is conducted by adult volunteers in partnership with WSU faculty and county staff.

4-H Live Animal Exhibits

RULES: ALL new 4-H members exhibiting for the first time, entering exhibits into this year’s fair, need to stop by the fair office to sign and pickup their exhibitor card, and receive an assigned Exhibitor Number. A signature on the Exhibitor Card is needed in order to enter exhibits. Animal entries accepted Thursday, July 23 from 3 to 9 p.m. Dogs and cats must be in place by 9:45 a.m. each day of the fair. Exhibits other than animals will be entered in the 4-H Building (i.e. arts & crafts, sewing, 4-H record books, etc.) on Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. Gardening and Food Exhibits are to be entered in the 4-H building on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. Notify a Department Superintendent of any livestock by Wednesday, two weeks before the Fair (unless otherwise specified in Department). Spots filled on a first come, first served basis. Poultry, rabbit and cavy by Saturday, two weeks before the Fair. Herdsmanship is required by all animal exhibitors 4-H and FFA. Showmanship of all animals is required, failure of showmanship will result in a loss of all premiums.

ANIMAL HEALTH AND THE USE OF ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES
The use of illegal drugs and/or the improper use of animal health products or foreign substances will not be tolerated in the Washington State 4-H Youth Development Program. Extension personnel, 4-H volunteers, families, youth, and fair/show officials have a legal and moral obligation not to misuse these products. We have the responsibility to tell others not to use these substances, and to report those who do use an illegal substance.

RULES: This is a noncompetitive division for all primary 4-H project areas. All entries will receive 8 premium points and a special participation ribbon.
Primary ages K to 2nd grades, must be five years of age before January 1 of current 4-H year, and enrolled in a kindergarten program. All items must be related to member project areas. Follow individual project area guidelines for Fair entries.
4-H Primary members can not enter animals larger than a Pygmy Goat.

RULES: All exhibitors will notify the superintendent of their entries by July 18th, the Saturday one week prior to the Fair. Online registration open until July 17th. Open to members enrolled in Mason County 4-H/FFA Cavy projects only. All Cavies must be 12 oz or over. All animals will be fed and watered by 4-H/FFA club members unless owner places an “owner will feed” sign on coop and is then responsible for feeding their animal(s). All entries will be checked by a veterinarian for mites, lice, and other diseases upon arrival to the fair, at the back gate. Any animals found with mites, lice or other diseases will be rejected. The veterinarian's decision is final. Exhibitors must identify animals entered by breed, variety, class, sex and ear number. Cavies may be limited per breed per exhibitor. When space becomes an issue 4-H and FFA entries will displace Open Class entries. All cavies will be judged by the American Rabbit Breeders Association's Standard of Perfection. All cavies must have an identifying tag in the left ear. No crossbreeds will be allowed. Exception to this rule applies to Division 382, Pet Class. All 4-H/FFA cavy exhibitors will be required to complete one shift of Herdmanship during the Fair. Showmanship is required of all 4-H/FFA animal project members.
“Runners” will bring cavies to the type judging table. Equipment entries may be new or well cleaned used equipment. All equipment must be made by the exhibitor. Entries other than animals must be accompanied by a 3”x 5” card explaining the entry: What the entry is, How it was made, Where it will be used and any special techniques used.

All entries will be brought to the fairgrounds through the back gate on Thursday, July 23 between the hours of 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. All entries will be checked by a veterinarian for mites, lice, and other diseases upon arrival to the fair, at the back gate. Any animal found with mites, lice, or other diseases will be rejected. The veterinarian’s decision is final. All exhibitors are responsible for cleaning cages of animals they have entered in the Fair each day. Each exhibitor may enter a maximum of five rabbits per variety. Each exhibitor is required to enter Herdsmanship. The American Rabbit Breeders Association publications, “Standards of Perfection” will be used as the official reference for evaluating rabbits. All exhibitors must enter showmanship with an animal also entered in type. All rabbits on exhibit must have a permanent ear number for identification purposes and this number must be recorded on the entry card. All rabbits are to be shown by breed. RULES: Exhibitor must confine their cats to the exhibit area, show ring and designated grooming area. All cats in competition must be at least four months old.
Cages and cats must be ready for display by 9:45am. Cats will remain in the barn until 5:00 pm. When removing cats from grounds, they must be taken directly to cars. Parents are restricted from grooming and touching cats unless an unsafe situation arises. Exhibitors must provide their own litter tray, food and water dishes. All cages must be covered on the floor, back, sides and top. Do not use materials a cat may destroy. The fair will provide cages. Exhibitors may show more than one cat in type class if space allows with the maximum of two cats. All cats must be vet checked on Friday morning and visually checked every morning of fair. Kittens must be born before April 1, but under 8 mos. of age. Two cats per cage will be allowed if the cats reside with the same family and are accustomed to each other. Proof of vaccination for rabies by a licensed veterinarian must be shown to fair time veterinarian during vet check prior to benching cats. Feline Panleukopenia, Feline Rhinotrachetitis, Calicii, Leukemia Virus and Chlamydia vaccinations are recommended. Worm treatment is also highly recommended. Cats showing agitated behavior may be removed from cage for short periods of time, with permission of Superintendent. Any cat showing overaggressive behavior will be sent home and not allowed to return. Equipment: Each cat must have an approved cat harness on at all times and have an approved leash on cat whenever cat is out of cage and being shown. Each exhibitor must have his/her own tack box for storing exhibitor's and cat's equipment. All exhibitors must have an Educational Display.

RULES: This Division is open to 4-H members enrolled in Mason Co. 4-H dog project, provided member is enrolled in the project prior to April 1. Entry needs to be turned in to Superintendent two weeks before fair. Online registration open until July 13th.This division will follow “Washington State 4-H Dog Program Guidelines” publication EM2728. Veterinarian check-in is Thursday at 6pm Rabies certificate, signed by a licensed veterinarian, needs to be shown to the fair-time veterinarian at check in. All dogs must be benched with the appropriate number of 4-H members and chaperones by 9:45 a.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All dogs must be benched with benching chains and “quick release” collars. Dogs may be crated. There is to be no eating or drinking in the benching area. Primary members and their dogs may be excused at 6pm each day of the fair. Exhibitors are to use a 6 ft. leash with swivel snap. Chain leashes are not allowed. Training collars will be used outside the benching area. No fancy collars, spike, or other special training collars are permitted. Nothing is to be hanging from the collar during competition. Show leads may be used in Showmanship class. 4-H members need to keep their dogs in the exhibit area, show ring or designated exercise area.
The dogs will be on a leash at all times except in obedience or agility class. Members are not allowed to do intensive training of dogs on fairgrounds. Abuse or severe unwarranted disciplining of dogs on the fairgrounds will be grounds for excusing the member without premiums.
Any dog deemed to be a danger by the superintendent might be dismissed from the fair. Each exhibitor exhibiting a dog must enter Showmanship and Obedience classes. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of premiums. Members should show only dogs they have groomed and trained themselves.Senior Specials class: is for members that have won a Grand is Senior Showmanship at the County Level or a Blue at State level or hold and AKC junior showmanship number.

RULES: See detailed Health Regulations which can be obtained at the Mason County Extension Office 360-427-9670 x691. Animals must pass to be exhibited or shown. All entries must be checked by the veterinarian upon entry onto the fairgrounds at the back gate, Thursday before fair between 3-9 p.m.
All 4-H animals will be placed in their own section of the barn. All exhibitors will be assigned barn duty. Premium points WILL BE FORFEITED if barn duties are not fulfilled. All 4-H beef entries must be preregistered with superintendent two weeks before the fair. All animals must be double tied and will be led with a tie rope or show halter lead strap while on the Fairgrounds. A cleanup approval paper needs to be signed by department superintendent before premiums will be awarded.

Animal must pass regulations to show & exhibit. All 4-H animals will be placed in their own section of the barn. Premium points will be forfeited, if barn duties are not fulfilled and post fair clean-up completed. All 4-H dairy entries must be entered with the superintendent no later than due date listed above. No dairy animals with horns will be permitted to exhibit except those in the Junior Heifer Calf Classes. Horns as defined for all other Classes shall include “scurs”, “nubbins”, or “stubs”, which extend beyond the skin. (This applies when qualifying for State Fair.) Exhibitors are required to milk their animals. Proper 4-H standards of dress are required for showing.

RULES: All members exhibiting must enter showmanship. No llamas will be allowed in the horse arena. Any llama unmanageable by exhibiting member or showing extreme signs of stress will be sent home. No tranquilizers will be allowed. An exercise area will be assigned for llamas. Llamas will not be allowed in other areas of the Fairgrounds without special permission from the 4-H Llama Superintendent or Fair Manager. Llamas must be attended by their exhibitor every day of Fair. 4-H members may pre-arrange with a Mason County llama rancher to help on their ranch to be able to exhibit a llama from that ranch. Arrangements must be made by April 1. Llamas may be used by members of the same family as long as each child is in a different age group. Member may receive premiums in three (3) classes only, one of which must be Showmanship. Only junior, intermediate and seniors are eligible to show llamas. Due to space restrictions, safety concerns, and animal well being issues, only intact males under 16 months of age, females, and gelded males may be shown. Only approved, appropriate llama/alpaca tack will be allowed. A halter must remain on animals at all times, in case of emergency. Exhibitors are responsible to provide their own herdsmanship and animal care equipment and supplies, as well as feed. Clean, safe, and appropriate attire should be worn by exhibitors while in the barn. Sandals are not appropriate. Llamas younger than 12 months may not be used in the pack class competition. Packs must be put on in handlers class to be used in trail obstacles. Exhibitors must complete a llama certificate available at the WSU Extesnion Office and return to Superintendent by June 25th, with entry form. Online registration open until June 24th.

RULES: Any breed or crossbreed. Horse must have been enrolled as exhibitor’s project by April 1st current year. Premium Points will be paid on exhibitor’s five highest ribbons. Anyone participating in Western Games Showmanship, must compete in at least 3 of the 6 gaming events.
All Washington 4-H Youth participating in all Equine projects and activities must wear ASTM/SEI approved headgear when riding or driving. The headgear must have a chin strap and be properly fitted. It is strongly encouraged for all equestrians to wear headgear at all times when working around horses. To qualify for novice Classes, exhibitors must be in their first or second year in the performance horse project. Novice exhibitors may enter Classes 7, 9, 10, 11, and 12. Novice exhibitors may also participate in Western Games. Online registration will be open until July 9th.
